Textural Analysis Of A Music Front Cover

Denotation: The magazine cover consists of colour photograph of a man looking straight at the camera but with is eyes closed. Holding a gun to his throat, It is a (CU) close up head and shoulders showing his shoulders and his face only. The background of the photograph is a grey concrete colour and the photograph covers the whole of the magazine front cover.
Behind the man is The Source Masthead, very bold and traditional font also in  front of the man is ten separate cover lines in red and white with a small black shadow . The man photographed on the covers name is in red and underlined
A bar code is visible in the bottom left corner.

Masthead: The Source is very bold and distinctive- it is all red with a tiny outline of white and a black drop shadow. The Font used is a sens serif font and after the first letter of each word the letter is in higher case and the rest is a lower case letter they have a lot of space between them. The font  that is used is a bold Ariel black font .The Source magazine is a  United States based monthly full –colour magazine covering hip hop music politics and culture suggesting this magazine is about  music and the background of hip hence the cover line under the masthead- the bible of hip hop music . The magazine itself was founded in 1988 and it is the world’s second longest running rap periodical, behind the United Kingdom based on publication Hip Hop collection. Obviously ‘The Source’ tells the audience that this magazine is about music and musicians and the undercover story about hip hop.

The cover photograph is of The Game. He is posed in a very aggressive ‘kill me suicide’ kind of way-his pose and clothing are a very kill me expressive. His string vest is not fully shown but it is very hood also his tattoos are very appealing to the rappers and young people in the music industries. The Game pose is in connection with his cover line ‘The Game suicide is not an option’ suggesting that he has decided to take his life and it’s not an option also that the music industry is not all that great. His costume and prop has been chosen very carefully to appeal to the target audience of the magazine who are most likely male some female but mostly male. His facial expression shows that he is scared to pull the trigger or maybe expressions of relief and it’s very interesting and exciting at the same time to the reader and target audience such as young males also trying to pursue their dreams of being a rapper and trying to get involved and want to find out the low down information which is going on in the music industry.

The coverline ‘The Game suicide is not an option’ could be related to the feud he had with G-Unit a big rap group which The Game was already in until he had a misunderstanding with 50 cent another rapper in the group  as to whether the Game made a publicity stunt to boost the sales of the albums  and this then became became public and The Game got booted out of G-unit. So this front cover of the magazine could be a smooth come back that he’s not going to give up  easily and he’s coming back harder and better than he ever was hence ‘the suicide is not an option’ coverline.

The different Coverlines tell us that this magazine doesn’t concentrate on just one genre of music, and doesn’t just focus on music it is very diverse in what it chooses to put on the front cover and write about it. The Artist mentioned on the cover lines include Lil Mama, Three 6 Mafia, Twister. All these artists are American
All the Coverlines are very bold and traditional this suggests that The Source magazine has existed for a long time and has almost become a United Kingdom organisation. Also showing that it hasn’t changed over the past years and that something that the readers can rely on is it consistency.

When I consider all of these points, I would suggest that the most likely target audience is young adults male and female but most likely male audience then female who would be aged 18-25 who would have a good knowledge of hip hop music culture and the history of it and a definite interest in a wide range of music styles and genres such as rap, hip hop, jazz and the music industry in general. They are likely to be well educated in all music hip hop rap music and would have a lot of interest in United Kingdom culture and what it has to offer.
